What’s Your Plan?

I’m not in the mood for legs today. You wanna do chest man?

That was what I overheard a teenager saying while I was seated on the calf raise machine. Halfway through his leg workout, he figured that he just wasn’t in the mood for legs today, so he jumped on the bench press to start his chest workout. It didn’t sound like a very efficient way to be working out, but in all honesty, I was exactly the same back at that age.

In my high school days, I just walked in the gym and tried to work out my chest as often as I can. In fact, the only thing I ever wanted to do was the bench press. If I could work out my chest every other day, then I would. This obviously led to major imbalances in my muscle distribution, but more importantly, this way of exercising got me nowhere.

I had no specific goal, and more importantly, I had no plan of how to achieve that goal.

Walking into the gym without a plan in mind, is almost just as bad as sitting on the couch wishing you could be fit. Well not quite, but the point is that without a plan of attack, you waste time by not understanding what movements and exercises are actually beneficial to give you what you want.

Without planning ahead, you miss out on opportunities to really bring your physique to the next level. For example, most people will struggle with establishing well-developed biceps, because they don’t understand that the biceps are split into two heads and each head controls a slightly different motion.

The majority of people who exercise do it with an intent, whether it be health, looks, strength, athleticism, or whatever reason. Whether or not you can achieve the goal you have comes down to:

  1. Consistent attendance and effort in the gym
  2. Attention to your nutritional habits
  3. Most importantly, the application of various bits of fitness knowledge

If you were to ask me to pick the point that is the most important, I would tell you that number 3 would top my list. Why you might ask? As much as I like to believe that hard work and constant attendance will get you somewhere, I can’t. What you can get by hard work and constant attendance is results, but in order to achieve the specific results that you were aiming for, you have to know what you want and what you have to do in order to achieve it.

At Gimme Fit, our fitness professionals can give you the tools and experience you need to fulfill whatever goals you have. Let’s be honest, you wouldn’t see yourself sitting in a chair reading about how to get a 6 pack; but knowing things like your abdominal muscles are split into the rectus abdominis and transverse abdominis, or that your obliques are split between internal and external plus a portion of your latissimus dorsi can even help make them stand out, is crucial in helping you develop a plan that will fit your goals.

You don’t need to hear the spiel about how everyone is his or her own individual, but there’s some truth to that. Each individual has personal needs that can’t be filled in with a generalized plan to success. So if you’ve tried and succeeded, then good for you; you can start to figure out how your body functions and how to better control it. If not, then check us out– we’re trained, experienced, and here to help!
