You Don’t Need a “Detox” After a Loose Summer. Here’s What Actually Works.

Two months of cookouts, vacation food, and patio drinks, and suddenly every ad is selling you a “detox” — a juice cleanse, a 3-day reset, a tea that promises to flush it all out. Save your money. Your liver and kidneys already detox you for free, around the clock.

Why detoxes don’t do what they claim

There’s no food or drink that “flushes toxins” out of a loose summer. What a 3-day cleanse actually does is drop water weight you regain by Friday, leave you starving, and set up the binge that undoes it. It feels like doing something. It’s doing nothing.

What actually resets your eating

  • Protein at every meal. Aim for roughly 0.7–1g per pound of your target bodyweight — a 180 lb goal means about 130–180g a day. It keeps you full and holds onto your muscle.
  • Vegetables and water back in the rotation. Not because they’re “cleansing,” but because they crowd out the stuff that crept in over summer.
  • Regular meals. Skipping to “make up for it” backfires — you show up starving and overeat at night.

The real reset is boring, and it works

Eat like an adult most of the time, train a few times a week, and your body sorts itself out in a couple of weeks. No cleanse required. If you’ve got a health condition like high blood pressure or pre-diabetes, check with your doctor before any big diet change.
